Bobbie C. Bradley

A Legacy of Compassion, Dedication, and Community Empowerment

Born and raised in Hampton, Virginia, Bobbie C. Bradley has dedicated her life to service, guided by compassion, resilience, and a deep sense of community. As the youngest of five children, Bobbie was profoundly inspired by her mother, Ednora Clark, who made history as the first African American dietitian at Riverside Hospital and co-authored the first nutritional guide for Eastern State Hospital. Ednora’s strength and determination as a single mother raising five children set an early example for Bobbie, fostering a lifelong commitment to care, advocacy, and service.

In 1979, Bobbie married Matthew Bradley Sr., a devoted partner who would become an integral part of her journey. Encouraged by Matthew, her mother, and her older sister, Teresa, Bobbie embarked on a career defined by empathy and compassion. She graduated from Bethel High School that same year and pursued her calling to become a certified nursing assistant. Following in the footsteps of her mother and Teresa, Bobbie began her career at Eastern State Hospital, where she developed a deep passion for supporting individuals with mental health challenges. This experience inspired her to further her education and become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Together, Bobbie and Matthew Bradley Sr. co-founded Heart & Soul LLC in 1994, bringing to life their shared vision of creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for elderly individuals and people with special needs. The couple made significant personal sacrifices to open their first assisted living facility, which was initially licensed to serve six residents. Their home, filled with the warmth of Bobbie’s compassionate care and unwavering dedication, became the foundation of a legacy that would go on to serve countless individuals in need. During these early years, Matthew Sr. supported Bobbie by caring for their children and managing other responsibilities, allowing her to focus on building and nurturing Heart & Soul.

In 2005, Bobbie expanded her impact by establishing the Heart & Soul Training Center on Chestnut Avenue in Newport News. The center provided essential training in medication management, direct care, and professional certifications, creating opportunities for individuals who faced barriers such as limited formal education or nonviolent criminal histories. Bobbie also developed programs for individuals participating in work-release programs, offering them a second chance to build meaningful careers and brighter futures. Her dedication to teaching and empowering others reflected her unwavering belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to grow and succeed.

Throughout her career, Bobbie worked at several respected mental health facilities, including Peninsula Behavioral Center, Woodside Behavioral Center, and Patrick Henry Hospital. Her hands-on approach, warm personality, and genuine compassion made her a beloved figure among colleagues, patients, and families alike. Her passion for mentoring extended to her daughter, Ednora, whom she inspired to pursue a career in nursing. Together, they conducted training sessions for care providers throughout the community and in Gloucester, helping to carry forward Bobbie’s vision of comprehensive, compassionate care.

Although Bobbie retired for medical reasons, her influence has remained strong. She continues to visit Heart & Soul facilities, where she enjoys spending time with residents and handing out pocket change—an enduring tradition that dates back to the organization’s earliest days. This simple yet meaningful gesture reflects her belief in bringing joy to others and symbolizes her lifelong commitment to enriching the lives of those in her care.

Bobbie’s legacy also includes her instrumental role in shaping Heart & Soul C.D.C., expanding the organization’s mission to include community development, workforce training, and life-skills programs. Her passion for uplifting individuals—especially those often overlooked by society—has left an enduring impact and continues to inspire future generations of caregivers, leaders, and community advocates.

Bobbie C. Bradley’s life story is one of unwavering love, resilience, and selfless service. Throughout her career, she was inspired by her family’s legacy and supported by her husband during the formative years of Heart & Soul’s establishment. Today, although retired from professional practice, Bobbie’s journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and the lasting difference one person can make in a community. Her legacy of care, empowerment, and community service continues to inspire all those she has mentored and the countless lives she has touched.
